The Memorial

The purpose of this Memorial is NOT national, but LOCAL; to commemorate those who served and especially those who were killed in action (KIA) from Pottstown, Lower Pottsgrove, West Pottsgrove and Upper Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania.  A special Memorial is currently located at the front of the Pottstown Library for the sole purpose of honoring those killed in action, totaling over 100.

The design and overall appearance of the Memorial is based on the features of several current World War II memorials.  It will be simplistic yet impactful, containing elements which will not only memorialize, but serve to inform the viewer.

Features of the Memorial to note:

  • The main structure will consist of a wall 21ft long by 7ft high.  The top portion of the vertical face will display the 3900 names printed in gold on bronze plaques.  At each end adjoining the wall will be a pier, 2ft 8in square by 8ft high, on-which the history of World War II will be placed.  The main structure will be manufactured and built by Universal Concrete Products Corp.
  • The History of the War will include:  the Pacific and European Theaters, The Home-front (Women in the workforce, Victory gardens, etc.) and Gold Star Mothers.
